What is a favicon? Why do I need one?

June 7, 2011 by DPKGraphics

When you see the word, it seems a bit out of place and awkward but it does have a meaning. What am I talking about? I am talking about the word “favicon”. Just what is a favicon and why do you need one?

Read on to learn about favicons and how they can be used to drive more traffic to your website.

The term “Favicon” is not a very well-known one , but if you spend any amount of time online, chances are you have seen thousands of favicons and just did not know what you were looking at. To put it plainly, a favicon is an icon (or image) that is attached to a particular website. Favicon is an integrated term from the words “favorite” and “icon”.  Website owners can choose what image they would like to have as their favorite icon that will appear on the left hand side of the address bar and tab of your site’s page.

The red arrow below is pointing to a customized favicon.  The blue arrow is pointing to the standard default favicon for a site that does NOT have a custom favicon design.

In terms of branding, you can consider the use of favicons to be another way of “branding” a name or business. Images are easier to recognize than names, when it comes to a visitor’s ability to remember one or the other. When you think of Pepsi, Nike, or Uncle Ben’s what do you think of first. Most likely it is the image.

A favicon might also be useful in help you to generate more traffic to your website. Think about it like this: If a visitor saves your website in their “Favorites” folder, the name of the website will appear in their list of “Favorites”, as well as the website’s favicon to the left of the name. It is used as the name implies, it is the icon that signifies a person’s “favorite” website.  And your site is more likely to get bookmarked if you do have a favicon as opposed to not having one.

Online marketing analysts also claim that these little images have the power to influence whether the visitor chooses one website over another. The bottom line here is that in the world of online marketing, impressions matter, especially first impressions. One way to make your WordPress site stand out from your competition is the use of a picture or logo in the browser. It is a good way to brand your site and increase its importance in your visitor’s bookmark menu.

You want your customers to find your site quickly and easily; always seeing it when they open their Favorites folder. The more a customer sees and thinks of your site, the greater your odds of converting a sale from them.
