Stephanie, I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner. My partner is the one who moves sites for me from html to wordpress. It is definitely possible to keep your domain name and your seo status, but it is a process getting everything set. I am sure she would be happy to set up a consult to answer your questions. We charge $50 per hour. Let me know if you are interested! :) DAWN

Hi Dawn, Great great article... just a few questions... while testing the new site, if I've built the sandbox on a dummy .biz domain, how do I keep it from being public and from being indexed by search engines? What about if the original site has been up and running for a while and already has ranking... is it possible to keep the same URL's in the wordpress site so the ranking isn't lost and they need to start over?

When you say to have a temporary landing page how do you do that after you've migrated over the wordpress db?... put an index.php page up and then delete it when you're ready? what if the original site is being hosted on a non-wordpress cabable host, do you forward the domain when you're ready and then mask the address? Or if you change the DNS to point to the new server it will work but you will have to change all the URL's to have a .com rather than .biz? and still mask the address?

If you change the dns will that affect their email with their current hosting provider?

Thanks!

Dawn, your info, above, is very informative and gives me a lot t think about. I was wondering if I'm going about my "big move" in the right way. I'm attempting to move my current content that is using SiteDelux into WordPress. I'm reducing the mult-paged interviews into one page posts and can insert the photos into each piece as I wish them to be.

My question is this: As I move things to WP ready to lauch, am I correct in naming the WP stuff as, say for instance, "boomerocity.com/newsite2011" (not the actual URL being used) and then, when ready to launch, remove the "newsite2011" portion when I'm ready to lauch or is this all wrong?

How nice of you to help your friend. I am not sure about Sandbox, I have not worked with that before. What hosting company are they going with? Moving the site files will depend on the hosting company. Some are easier than others when it comes to that. As far as permalinks and redirects, here is an article on that touches on it that might help... http://www.wealthydragon.com/2010/12/02/move-html-website-to-wordpress/

Good luck!

Dawn, this post was very helpful - thank you! Am assisting a friend on a very tight budget work through this process, and about to tackle it for him. He's also changing hosts....do you recommend the sandbox development occur in the new host environment? Any suggestions on tools for ensuring permalinks & redirects? I understand if you choose not to share details on what's in your your well-earned bag of tricks, but I'm hopeful! Thanks in advance for any additional help you provide.
